The first international mountain bike championship was held here in 1990, and many amateur and professional athletes live and train in the area. Skiing, cycling, snow boarding, kayaking, fishing, hunting, and climbing are all popular pastimes in Durango. You can also immerse yourself in Durango's artistic side in the many unique shops and art galleries, not to mention the wood, stone, and metal sculptures that can be found around the county. Two microbreweries and many fine restaurants make dining out a pleasure in Durango. If you are ready to leave civilization behind, there are many secluded camping spots and trails that lead off into the sunset. Fishing and hunting are also very popular and many trophies are recorded each year. Whether you stay in city limits, or head for the high country, all these elements combine to make Durango a special place to visit, and a dream come true to call home.
